Behind the object

3 November 2026 · Layer & Light

A Layer & Light headphone stand begins with a simple belief: something useful can still have presence. Each design is developed, prototyped, made in small batches and inspected in our UK studio before it is carefully packed and sent.

The Bearded Skull Headphone Stand: sculptural storage designed to earn its place in the room.

Designed to do more than hold headphones

A stand has an obvious practical job: give headphones a consistent home and keep them within easy reach. But it also sits in view, often at the centre of a desk, gaming setup, studio or shelf. That makes proportion, character and finish part of its usefulness.

Our collection is deliberately focused. The aim is not to fill a catalogue with variations that blur together; it is to make a small number of memorable objects, each with a clear identity. The result is practical display storage for gamers, music lovers, collectors and anyone who prefers an everyday object with a point of view.

1. Develop: begin with purpose and character

The first stage is to reduce an idea to its useful purpose, its proportion and its essential character. A strong concept needs to read clearly from across a room, yet still reward a closer look. The swept hair, moustache and beard of the Bearded Skull, for example, give it a very different presence from the cap and wrapped neck gaiter of the Tactical Skull.

This is where the object’s visual language is decided. A design may feel weathered, military, dark-fantasy or Norse-inspired, but it still needs to function as a coherent stand rather than a sculpture with storage added as an afterthought.

2. Prototype: check what matters in daily use

Before a design joins the collection, we check its fit, stability, finish and practical details. That stage matters because a product can look convincing in isolation and still feel wrong when it reaches a real desk. The way the object meets the surface, carries the headset and presents itself from different angles all contribute to the finished result.

What the prototype stage checks

  • Fit with the object’s intended use
  • Stability on a desk, shelf or studio surface
  • The clarity and consistency of the finish
  • Practical details that affect everyday use

3. Make: build the form with intention

Once a design has passed those checks, it is produced in the Layer & Light studio. Our headphone stands are made to order rather than taken from a warehouse shelf. That approach keeps production close to the design process and gives each physical object a clear route from order to inspection.

3D printing builds the object gradually, turning a digital form into a tangible piece. It is particularly well suited to the detailed hair, beard, armour, masks and collars that distinguish the collection. Those details are not decoration applied to a generic stand; they are part of the form itself.

Standard and hand-painted finishes

The collection includes standard filament finishes as well as hand-painted versions of selected designs. The standard pieces keep the form and surface character at the centre. If a different colour is important to a particular setup, customers can contact us about a special order.

Our hand-painted Bearded Skull and Tactical Skull stands are individually dry-brushed with metallic highlights. The process brings out edges and sculpted detail, while the hand finishing means every completed piece is subtly unique. It is a choice between two expressions of the same underlying design, rather than a difference in purpose.

4. Inspect, pack and send

Every physical object is inspected individually before it leaves the studio. Careful packing completes the process: the experience of receiving a considered object should feel consistent with the care taken to make it.

UK delivery is free on every physical order. Customers outside the UK can request a bespoke shipping and tax/import quote before ordering, because delivery costs and local charges vary by destination.

Finding the right character for your setup

There are currently eight stands in the Objects collection. The Bearded Skull and Viking Skull bring strong sculptural hair and beard detail. Tactical Skull, Recon Skull and Ghost Soldier take a more military-inspired direction. Ironbound Skull leans into dark-fantasy armour, while the two hand-painted options add metallic depth to the Bearded and Tactical forms.

The best choice is the one that suits the room as well as the headset. Consider the colours already on the desk, whether you want the stand to blend in or become a focal point, and how much surface detail you prefer. Whichever design you choose, the same process sits behind it: develop, prototype, make and send.
